Atlanta United has loaned Toronto FC midfielder Franco Ibarra for the balance of the 2023 MLS season.
The transaction was announced Monday by both Eastern Conference clubs, with Atlanta receiving $50,000 in 2023 general allocation money in exchange.
Ibarra, 22, has participated in 17 MLS games (15 starts) for Atlanta this season. Since joining the Five Stripes in 2021, the Argentina native has one assist in 53 appearances (35 starts).
“Franco is a bright talent who will provide us with both quality and steel in our midfield,” stated Toronto FC general manager Jason Hernandez in a statement. “He is a warrior, a top young professional, and we are excited to have the opportunity to work with Franco for the remainder of the 2023 season.”
Ibarra recently returned from a loan to Argentina’s Defensa Y Justicia, resulting in a roster stalemate. A team can only have three U22 Initiative additions on its roster, and Atlanta currently has midfielder Santiago Sosa and strikers Edwin Mosquera and Erik Lopez.
