Austin FC hires Man City assistant Rodolfo Borrell as sporting director

Rodolfo Borrell

Rodolfo Borrell, a renowned Manchester City assistant manager, was named the Major League Soccer club’s sporting director on Friday.

Borrell, 52, has been at Manchester City for nine seasons, first as the Premier League club’s global technical director until being named first-team assistant coach under manager Pep Guardiola in 2016.

Borrell was chosen as assistant manager before Manchester City won the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup last season.

He joins an MLS team that is only in its third season. Last season, Austin advanced to the Western Conference finals but struggled in the early part of the 2023 season. Austin is back in playoff contention after three straight victories.

“He brings an incredibly impressive track record, a wealth of experience, and a passion for the beautiful game, and we fully believe he is the right person to move our ambitions forward and develop the best players, coaches, and staff for the first team, second team, and academy,” Austin FC founder and majority owner Anthony Precourt said.

Sean Rubio had been working as Austin’s interim sporting director since January when former US national team star Claudio Reyna was fired following a family spat with US men’s coach Gregg Berhalter.

According to the club, Rubio has been promoted to senior vice president of player personnel, where he will supervise roster management.
