Calvin Ramsay joins Preston on loan from Liverpool as young right-back seeks to revive career

Calvin Ramsay has joined Preston North End on loan from Liverpool for a year.

Ryan Lowe’s first signing of the transfer season comes as the Lilywhites look to improve on their top-half finish.

After joining Liverpool from Aberdeen in a £ 4 million deal, the right-back made just two appearances in a season marred by injury, first with a back problem and then with a knee ailment that necessitated surgery in February.

In 2022/23, he only played 93 minutes of football and hasn’t played competitively since November.

However, the Scottish kid is highly regarded and received praise for his improving performance at Pittodrie, where he recorded nine assists before joining Jurgen Klopp’s side.

‘I’m thrilled to sign on loan for the season,’ Ramsay stated in a video posted on Preston’s Twitter. I can’t wait to get started and visit everyone at Deepdale.’

Preston has a history of signing Liverpool players on free transfers, most recently signing Ben Woodburn this year and welcoming Sepp van den Berg on loan between 2020 and 2022.

Alvaro Fernandez and Thomas Cannon, two of their top players this season, were both on loan to Preston, thus the possibility to get experience as a key member of the squad is there.

Because Lowe prefers a 3-5-2 system, Ramsay may be given the freedom to pummel up and down the wing.

This season, Brad Potts held down the right wing-back position, and if Lowe expects to use him there again, he will face fierce competition.

The Lancashire club will be looking to improve on their 12th-place result last season under the flamboyant Lowe. They had a hot streak before a five-game losing streak ended their chances of making the playoffs.
