Real Salt Lake defeated the New York Red Bulls 3-1 on Saturday night in Sandy, Utah, thanks to a goal by Diego Luna in each half.
Luna’s goal extended Salt Lake’s unbeaten streak to nine games. Late in the second half, Jefferson Savarino scored his third goal.
RSL (10-7-7, 37 points) has scored seven goals in their last two home games, including a win over Orlando City on Saturday.
New York (6-9-8, 26 points) never recovered after conceding a goal three minutes into the game. This season, the Red Bulls have only won one away game.
RSL’s defense kept New York at bay. Frankie Amaya scored late for the Red Bulls, but New York never seriously threatened the Utah club.
Salt Lake wasted no time in putting New York in trouble, as Luna hammered home a right-footed rocket in the second minute. Savarino crossed to Luna, who was just outside the top of the 6-yard box. Luna had an unimpeded view of the goalmouth and took advantage of his opportunity.
Before halftime, New York struggled to generate any serious scoring chances. During the first 45 minutes, RSL enjoyed a 6-4 advantage in total shots, allowed zero shots on frame, and controlled possession 59 percent of the game.
Luna scored his second goal in the 53rd minute, chipping a ball over Red Bulls goalie Carlos Cornel’s head. The RSL midfielder pulled the ball away from four New York players and passed it to Danny Musovski. Musovski then returned it to Luna in the center of the box in a give-and-go, and Luna shot it into the net’s back corner.
In the 80th minute, Amaya scored for New York after diverting a feed from Kyle Duncan past Zac MacMath. The Red Bulls’ chances of a comeback were shortly dashed.
Less than a minute later, Savarino added insurance for Salt Lake, sending a long ball inside the far post past a diving Coronel.
