FC Dallas out for more surprises vs. D.C. United

FC Dallas will aim to build on their amazing upset victory when they play D.C. United on Tuesday, who is looking to avoid a third straight road setback.

Despite missing leading scorer Jesus Ferreira due to international duty and winger Paul Arriola due to injury, Dallas (8-7-5, 29 points) defeated defending MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield champions Los Angeles FC 2-0 at home on Saturday.

Bernard Kamungo scored his second goal of the season in his debut appearance, while Sam Junqua added insurance for Dallas in the 90th minute.

After missing the previous two games due to injury, attacking midfielder Sebastian Lletget made his first start in nearly a month to help Dallas win. Lletget helped Dallas bounce back from a 3-0 loss to rival Austin FC a week ago.

“I am very happy,” Lletget stated. “We fought hard and needed this victory, especially after what happened against Austin.” We had players missing and others injured, and it was not easy since we know the LAFC is a very powerful squad, but we got the win.”

D.C. United (7-9-5, 26 points) will try to move on from the latest in a string of games that manager Wayne Rooney claims have been doomed by slow starts.

Randall Leal scored twice before halftime for D.C. in Saturday’s 2-0 loss to Nashville SC.

“Three or four times this season, it’s happened where we’ve come out and lost the game in the first 45 minutes,” Rooney remarked. “Yeah, the goals — mistakes and sloppy goals to give away, but we didn’t deserve anything from the game based on the first 45 minutes.”

It was the first time D.C. United had been held scoreless in eight games. They may struggle to score again on Tuesday after leading scorer Christian Benteke received a yellow card, which will result in a card accumulation suspension.

Taxi Fountas, who came on at halftime on Saturday, is expected to start in place of Benteke at the top of D.C. United’s forward line.
