Gold Cup: Honduras earns last-minute draw vs. Qatar

Honduras earns last-minute draw vs. Qatar

Alberth Elis scored in second-half stoppage time to pull Honduras to a 1-1 tie with Qatar in a CONCACAF Gold Cup Group B match on Thursday in Glendale, Ariz.

Qatar had been ahead since Tameem Mansour’s goal in the seventh minute.

Qatar (0-1-1, 1 point) and Honduras (0-1-1, 1 point) remain winless through their first two matches. Qatar finishes group play against Mexico on Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif., while Honduras plays Haiti on Sunday in Charlotte.

Qatar was on the verge of a victory when a set piece allowed Mansour to throw a high ball from the left side near the penalty spot. Rubilio Castillo nodded the ball down, and Elis made an acrobatic move to beat Qatar goalkeeper Meshaal Barsham with a right-footed strike.

Moustafa Tarek drove down the left flank with the ball and centered a cross to the middle of the penalty area, where Mansour headed it past Honduras goalkeeper Edrick Menjivar in the first half.

Menjivar was credited with two saves, while Barsham made three.
