Inter Miami is on the verge of achieving the largest milestone in North American football history, as they close in on Lionel Messi.
Everything indicates that the Argentine has struck an agreement with the MLS Titans and is close to finalizing a contract that might involve ties with Adidas and Apple. In the process, the player would forego a trip to Camp Nou this summer.
However, according to Gaston Edul, signing Messi will not be Inter Miami’s primary aim. They are, in fact, just getting started.
According to the Argentine writer, the MLS heavyweights are expected to begin talks with other former Barcelona stars such as Sergio Busquets, Jordi Alba, and even Luis Suarez.
Alba and Busquets have stated that they intend to depart Camp Nou at the end of the month. They will become free agents, which has already made them desirable transfer targets.
Busquets has been considering a move to Inter Miami for some time, and with Messi likely to join, it appears only a matter of time before the veteran midfielder agrees to join David Beckham’s team. The same is true for Alba, who is looking to advance in his job.
Meanwhile, Suarez is presently playing for Gremio. However, he may consider joining Inter Miami in exchange for a substantial contract and, more significantly, the chance to reunite with some of his former teammates.
All four, including Messi, were once teammates at Barcelona, where they helped the club win the Champions League in 2015. The possibility of seeing them in the same team may cause nostalgia among Barcelona fans.
However, signing all four players this summer appears to be a difficult assignment for Inter Miami, especially given the MLS’s strict salary ceiling. So it will be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks.
