Smith played for Lepton Highlanders in the Huddersfield and District Association Football League. At the ages of 14 and 15, he tried out for Football League clubs Huddersfield Town and Oldham Athletic. He was discovered by Chesterfield while playing for Kirkheaton and was asked for a trial match before being given a position on the club’s scholarship system. During the 2001-02 season, he began practicing with the first team and made his debut on the bench for Chesterfield’s 1-0 victory over Reading at the Madejski Stadium on December 1, 2001.

On 22 November 2002, he made his debut in a Football League Trophy encounter against Port Vale, coming on as a substitute in the 77th minute and scoring in the penalty shoot-out, which was eventually lost 4-3. His Football League debut occurred on September 13, 2003, when he came on as a 79th-minute replacement for the injured Mark DeBolla in a 1-0 loss to Notts County.

He went on to make two more appearances that month, against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford, both on the left wing. In March 2004, he was offered a two-year professional deal with Chesterfield, beginning with the 2004-05 season. On 10 October, he made his first league start for Chesterfield in a 1-0 loss to Hull City.

In February 2005, he underwent laparoscopic surgery on his knee to treat cartilage damage, which was projected to keep him out for six weeks. In a 2-2 draw with Brentford on March 18, he made his comeback as a 60th-minute replacement for Carlos Logan. Soon after his comeback, he suffered a left ankle injury in Chesterfield’s 3-2 defeat to AFC Bournemouth. This put him out for the remainder of the season, in which he made 19 appearances.

Smith joined newly promoted Conference team FC Halifax Town on 2 July 2013, making his debut in the club’s opening match of the 2013-14 season, a 5-1 loss away to Cambridge United on 11 August. On June 18, 2015, he joined Halifax’s National League rivals Wrexham. On 5 November 2015, he signed a loan deal with Guiseley until January 2016. Smith impressed in eight outings while on loan, prompting Guiseley to sign him permanently on January 5, 2016.

Smith’s tenure with Guiseley was brief, as he joined Alfreton Town on October 5, 2016. Smith scored twice in a 4-3 loss against F.C. United of Manchester on his debut in the National League North.

On January 5, 2018, he re-signed with National League North team Gainsborough Trinity. He made his sole appearance the next day as a half-time replacement in a 4-0 loss away to Blyth Spartans before joining Gainsborough’s divisional rivals Bradford Park Avenue on January 26, 2018. He was released at the end of the 2017-18 season. Smith joined Matlock Town of the Northern Premier League Premier Division on July 30, 2018. After discussions with manager Dave Frecklington, he departed the club on October 3, 2018.

Smith joined Northern Premier League Premier Division team Grantham Town as a player-coach on February 6, 2019, reporting to managers Russ Cousins and Paul Rawden. Smith made his league debut six days later, starting in a 2-1 home win against South Shields.

He appeared in five games as Grantham finished 18th in the Northern Premier League Premier Division in 2018-19. He was appointed player-assistant manager on September 27, 2019, and will leave the club on February 27, 2020, along with Cousins and Rawden. Smith had made 11 appearances and scored one goal in all competitions at the time the 2019-20 season was canceled and the results were wiped out due to the COVID-19 epidemic in England.


Smith came up via Tottenham Hotspur’s youth system. Smith joined Wycombe Wanderers on a short-term loan in August 2009 to cover for two injured right-backs, making his Football League debut against Charlton Athletic on August 8, 2009.
