The career of Alphonse Areola

Areola joined in the Clairefontaine football center at the age of 15 to continue his development. Areola returned to PSG the next year and signed his first professional contract, a three-year deal, in July 2009. Areola made his PSG senior debut against Brest. He replaced the club’s first-choice goalkeeper, Salvatore Sirigu, in the 48th minute.

Areola was loaned to Ligue 2 team RC Lens for the 2013-14 season, where he won the Ligue 2 Goalkeeper of the Year Award and was named to the Team of the Season. He was also named Eurosport’s Revelation of the Year, beating out N’Golo Kante and Gaetan Vussmann.
PSG then loaned Areola to Bastia for the 2014-15 season on July 26, 2014. During the season, Areola had 13 clean sheets.

On June 17, 2015, Villarreal announced the loan signing of Areola. Areola made his Villarreal debut against Real Betis on the first day of the season. Areola preserved 15 clean sheets in 37 games and conceded only 26 goals in his debut season, as Villareal finished fourth in La Liga. He also set a new club record of 620 minutes without conceding a goal, breaking Diego Lopez’s previous record of 615 minutes without allowing a goal.

Areola returns to PSG for the 2016-17 Ligue 1 season after a successful stay in Spain. After rejoining PSG, Areola made his debut against Arsenal on September 13, 2016. It was also his Champions League debut. Areola had a strong start to the season, but he was demoted to second-string goalkeeper behind Kevin Trapp after his form deteriorated. When PSG won the domestic treble in 2017-18, Areola and Trapp took turns on the court.

After PSG recruited experienced goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus, Areola was demoted to a rotational duty.

West Ham Utd

West Ham United announced the signing of Areola on a season-long loan with a purchase option on July 29, 2021. On September 22, he made his debut in the EFL Cup against Manchester United at Old Trafford. He appeared in 11 Europa League games, conceding eight goals and keeping five clean sheets as West Ham advanced to the 2021-22 Europa League semi-finals. He also competed in the FA Cup and League Cup, as well as one Premier League game.

Areola made his permanent transfer to West Ham United on June 27, 2022, signing a five-year contract with a one-year extension option. PSG was reportedly given a transfer price of around €12 million.

International Career 

Areola has represented France at all youth levels, including U16 and U21. He is also eligible to play for the Phillippines national team because both of his parents are of Filipino descent. The squad manager even personally invited him to consider playing for the national team.
Areola put on a remarkable performance as France won their first ever FIFA U20 World Cup in 2013.
