College career

As Jared Harper’s backup point guard in his first season at Auburn, Mitchell averaged 3.7 points and 1.9 assists per game. Due to NCAA transfer regulations, he missed his next season after transferring to Baylor after the season. He developed his all-around game and watched films of guards like Kyle Lowry and Jalen Brunson during his redshirt year. Mitchell started for one of the best teams in the country during his sophomore season. In a 91-63 victory over UT Martin on December 18, 2019, he recorded a season-high 19 points, four assists, and four steals. Mitchell had a 9.9 point and 3.8 assists per game average as a sophomore. Sacramento Kings (2021–present)

The Sacramento Kings selected Mitchell with the ninth overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He agreed to a rookie scale contract with the Kings on August 5, 2021. Mitchell, who along with Cam Thomas was named NBA Summer League MVP, contributed to the Kings winning the 2021 NBA Summer League championship. Mitchell was also chosen for the First Team All-NBA Summer League.

Mitchell made his NBA debut on October 20 in a 124-121 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers, compiling two points, three rebounds, and three assists. He had a career-high 28 points on March 20, 2022, in a 127-124 overtime loss to the Phoenix Suns, along with three rebounds and nine assists.
