Fabian Schär began his professional career with his hometown club Wil, then transferred to Basel in 2012, where he won the Swiss Super League each of his first three seasons before switching to Hoffenheim.

Fabian Schär made his senior debut for Switzerland in 2013 after competing at the 2012 Olympics. He represented the country at the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and 2020 as well as the FIFA World Cup in 2014, 2018, and 2022.

Fabian Schär, a St. Gallen native, started his playing career at his hometown club Wil, where he was raised through the youth ranks and eventually began to regularly play for Wil’s reserve team. On November 29, 2009, against FC Stade Nyonnais, he finally made his league debut after being added as a late substitute. Schär won the Championship title and finished second with Basel in the Swiss Cup at the conclusion of the 2012–13 Swiss Super League season. Basel advanced to the semifinals of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, where they faced Chelsea, the current champions, but were eliminated after losing both games and being defeated 2–5 overall.

Fabian Schär triumphed with Basel in his second league championship at the conclusion of the Super League 2013–14 season. They also advanced to the Swiss Cup final in 2013–14, but Zürich prevailed 2-0 after extra time. Basel made it to the group stage and took third place in their group during the 2013–14 Champions League campaign. As a result, they were eligible for the Europa League knockout stage, where they made it all the way to the quarterfinals.

Basel and Schär had a very successful season in 2014–15. That season, Basel won the title for the sixth time in a row. In the 2014–15 Swiss Cup, they made it to the final, but for the third consecutive year, they came in second place after falling to Sion 0–3 in the championship game. Basel participated in the Champions League’s group stage and advanced to the knockout rounds thanks to a 1-1 away draw against Liverpool. Later, Porto defeated Basel in the Round of 16 match.

Deportivo La Coruña

Schär committed to a four-year contract with Deportivo de La Corua on July 21. On August 20, he started his La Liga career in a 3-0 loss to Real Madrid at home. In the 2017–18 campaign, which resulted in the Galician team’s relegation, he scored two goals.

Newcastle United

Fabian Schär signed a three-year contract with Newcastle United on July 26, 2018, after Deportivo de La Corua was demoted from the La Liga and the club exercised his contract’s £3 million buyout clause.

On August 26, 2018, he made his club debut in a 2-1 loss to Chelsea. On January 19, 2019, Schär scored his first goal for Newcastle against Cardiff City, tallying two goals in a 3-0 victory at St. James’ Park. He opened the scoring for Newcastle against Burnley in a 2-0 victory, scoring from 30 yards out to win the February Goal of the Month competition for the Premier League and Match of the Day. International career

Fabian Schär represented Switzerland at the under-20 and under-21 levels of play. Schär made his debut for Switzerland’s U-20 team against Poland U-20 on November 17, 2011. On February 29, 2012, he took the field for the first time for the Swiss U-21 team in a 2-1 loss to the Austrian U-21. On September 10, 2012, in his fourth appearance for them against the U-21s of Estonia, he scored his first goal for the Swiss. This match served as the last opportunity to qualify for the 2013 UEFA European Under-21 Football Championship. Switzerland came in second place and qualified for the playoffs. Schär received a red card on October 12, 2012, during the first leg of the qualification play-offs against the German U-21 team after he fouled Sebastian Polter as the last man. The score remained 1-1 despite the goal from the penalty spot.

As a member of the Swiss under-23 team, he was chosen to represent Switzerland in the men’s football competition at the 2012 Summer Olympics. He participated in both of the tournament’s opening games for more than 90 minutes, but the team lost and placed fourth in their Group.
