All-time Career of Gabriel Magalhães

The So Paulo neighborhood of Pirituba is where Gabriel Magalhães was born. Gabriel started working at Ava when he was 13 years old, but after a week due to homesickness, he went back to So Paulo. After two weeks, he changed his mind, went back to Ava, and two years later, at the age of 16, received his first professional contract. Later, he was a member of the group that gained promotion to the Brazilian Série A in 2017.

On January 31, 2017, Gabriel Magalhães signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Lille of Ligue 1. After arriving, Gabriel taught himself French and used it to conduct the majority of his interviews. Following his time with Lille B, Marcelo Bielsa, the club’s then-head coach, loaned him to Troyes of Ligue 1 before bringing him to Dinamo Zagreb of Croatia, where he made just one league appearance for each club’s senior team.

Gabriel returned to Lille in 2018 and started his first game against Guingamp on February 10, 2019, in a 2-0 victory. The following season, he made a total of 14 appearances, and on April 14, 2019, he scored his first goal for Lille in a 5-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.

The following year, Gabriel started to play more frequently, teaming up with José Fonte at center back. All six of Lille’s Champions League group-stage games saw Gabriel start. He extended his agreement with Lille through January 31, 2023.

The defender’s patience was praised by Lille manager Christophe Galtier, who said, “I saw he had great potential and he was able to seize the first opportunity he got. He was eager to play and put in a lot of work while he waited. He serves as an example for other young people. Being intelligent enough to act in that way. How frequently do you observe players these days not working if they are not on the team?

Arsenal announced the long-term contract signing of Gabriel Magalhães on September 1, 2020. There was reportedly a lot of interest in the Brazilian, with several clubs prepared to match Lille’s asking price. Gabriel signed on for a sum that, with add-ons, came to around £27 million.

2020–21 season

Gabriel made his debut for Arsenal on September 12, the first day of the season, scoring the second goal in a 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage. Gabriel received Arsenal’s Player of the Month award for September as a result of his performance in the 2-1 victory over West Ham United on September 19, 2020. After appearing in five of Arsenal’s six games during the month, he took home the prize once more in October. In praise of Gabriel’s early performances, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said, “You move him from France to here at an early age, without talking the language, to adapt to a new way of playing as well… [but] he has done it really quickly and is showing a great mentality as well.”

Gabriel received his third Player of the Month award in December as a result of his performances in Arsenal’s 1-0 wins over Manchester United on November 1 and 0-0 draws with Leeds United on November 22, despite the team’s poor play in the latter half of 2020. Gabriel’s first goal at the Emirates came on November 29 during Arsenal’s 2-1 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers. On December 16, during a home game against Southampton, Gabriel was given his first red card for Arsenal after fouling both Ché Adams and Theo Walcott twice in the space of five minutes.

2021–22 season

All but three of Arsenal’s Premier League contests featured Gabriel. On October 30, 2021, he scored his first goal of the year in a 2-0 victory over Leicester City.

He was dismissed on January 1, 2022, with the score tied at 1-1 in the second half of Arsenal’s home game against Manchester City. Rodri scored the game-winning goal for City in injury time to make it 2-1 while Arsenal were reduced to ten men.

On 10 February, he scored the game’s only goal as Arsenal defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers at Molineux. On 1 May, he scored the game-winning goal against West Ham in a 2-1 victory at the London Stadium. Gabriel scored five Premier League goals in the course of the year.

2022–23 season

On August 27, 2022, Gabriel scored the game-winning goal in the Premier League against Fulham. Aleksandar Mitrovi had opened the scoring thanks to a mistake he had made, but his goal in the 86th minute gave Arsenal all three points in a 2-1 victory.

Arsenal revealed that Gabriel had renewed his long-term contract with the team on October 21, 2022.

In November, he scored the game’s lone goal as Arsenal defeated Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. He scored again against Fulham on March 12, 2023, heading in Arsenal’s opening goal during their 3-0 victory at Craven Cottage. His third goal against the Cottagers in four games.
