All-time Career of Iñaki Peña

Pea, who was born in Alicante, Valencian Community, began his playing career in 2004 at the age of five with Alicante CF’s youth program. He transferred from Villarreal CF to FC Barcelona’s La Masia in 2012 when he was just 13 years old. He was a starter in the championship game against Chelsea while playing for the team that won the 2017–18 UEFA Youth League.

On April 16, 2018, Pea extended his deal with Barça for three more seasons with an option for two more. Prior to the 2018–19 season, he was later promoted to the Segunda División B reserves. On October 6, 2018, he made his senior debut by starting in a 1–1 home draw against CD Atlético Baleares.

As a backup for Jasper Cillessen, who was an inactive substitute in the 1-0 away victory, Pea was called up to the main squad on October 30, 2018, for the first leg of the round of 32 Copa del Rey matchup with Cultural Leonesa. Throughout the season, he occasionally filled in for injured starter Marc-André ter Stegen and Cillessen on the bench.

During the 2019–20 season, Pea once more served as a reserve for the starting lineup to fill in for Neto’s injury absence. Barcelona chose to exercise the two-year contract extension option on Pea’s deal on October 6, 2020.

Loan to Galatasaray

Pea joined Galatasaray on loan for the rest of the season on January 31, 2022. He made his Süper Lig debut on February 6 at Alanyaspor in a 1-1 draw with former Barcelona assistant Domènec Torrent. Before club legend Fernando Muslera started making his way back from injury, he had a record of two draws and as many wins. By the second half of March, the Uruguayan had earned his spot back after Barcelona eliminated him from the UEFA Europa League.

Return to Barcelona

Pea returned to Barcelona after his loan agreement expired, and on November 1, 2022, he made his official first-team debut for manager Xavi in a 4-2 victory away at Viktoria Plze in the UEFA Champions League.

On January 3, 2023, Pea was officially added to the first team and given the number 13 jersey that had been worn by Neto before he left for AFC Bournemouth.

Pea extended his contract with Barcelona on May 9 of 2023, keeping him there through the year 2026. There was a 400 million euro buyout clause in the new contract.

International career

Pea won a total of 30 caps while representing Spain at the under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19, and under-21 levels. He finished second in the 2016 UEFA European Under-17 Championship while starting every game. His lone under-21 appearance came on November 12, 2020, in Marbella against the Faroe Islands, in a 2-0 victory that qualified his team for the European Championship the following year. He replaced lvaro Fernández at halftime.

Sergio Busquets’ positive COVID-19 test result caused some national team players to be placed in isolation, so Spain’s under-21 team was called up for the international friendly against Lithuania on June 8, 2021. Pea didn’t play, though.
