All-time Career of Issa Diop

Diop played youth football for Balma SC before transferring to Toulouse FC in 2006. He was born in Toulouse, Haute-Garonne. In September 2015, he started working out with the first team, and in November of that same year, he signed a professional contract. He was one of several new young players who joined the team, along with Yann Bodiger, Alexis Blin, Alban Lafont, and Zinédine Machach.

On November 28, 2015, against Nice, he made his Ligue 1 debut at the age of 18, playing the entire game alongside fellow rookie Lafont. On December 2, 2015, he made his second appearance and scored his first goal, helping his club defeat fellow relegation contender Troyes 3-0. In his rookie campaign, he made 21 appearances and contributed to the team’s eight shutouts. He received two red cards in a campaign in which the team’s only chance of avoiding relegation came from a victory on the final day.

In 2016–17, Diop made 30 Ligue 1 appearances. In April 2017, he was appointed as the club’s first-ever captain.

Diop was appointed club captain for the 2017–18 campaign in October. The Coupe de France quarterfinalist Toulouse struggled in the league and only avoided relegation by defeating AC Ajaccio in a play-off in May 2018.

West Ham United

West Ham United, a Premier League team, officially announced Diop’s transfer on June 19, 2018, after he committed to a five-year deal. The amount, which the British media reported to be £22 million, was not made public, but it was declared a club record, surpassing the previous mark of £20 million set in July 2017 with the signing of Marko Arnautovi. On August 25, Diop made his Premier League and West Ham debut. He became the first West Ham player to score an own goal on his Premier League debut when he scored one in a 3-1 away loss to Arsenal. Three days later, Diop scored his first goal for the team against AFC Wimbledon in an EFL Cup match. After West Ham had already conceded a goal after just 72 seconds, Diop scored an equalizer to help his team go on to win 3-1. He received praise for his early-season performances, particularly against Arsenal and Manchester United, whose manager, José Mourinho, praised Diop’s performance in West Ham’s 3-1 victory over his club as well as the scout who had seen Diop’s potential. In a 3-1 victory over Fulham at home on February 22, 2019, Diop scored his first Premier League goal.

After testing positive for COVID-19 on September 22, 2020, Diop was dropped from the West Ham lineup prior to their EFL Cup match against Hull City. Diop was replaced by Ryan Fredericks on February 9, 2021, after suffering a head injury during an FA Cup game against Manchester United, making him the first concussion substitute in English football. Diop later received no negative reports from the team, and manager David Moyes praised the club’s medical staff for how they handled Diop’s injury. Despite being a regular for West Ham at first, Diop’s playing time decreased after Craig Dawson and Kurt Zouma joined the team in 2021–2022.  Diop scored eight goals in 121 games for West Ham before moving on to Fulham in August 2022.

Diop signed a five-year contract to move permanently to Fulham on August 10, 2022, for an undisclosed sum. On August 23, Diop made his Fulham debut in a 2-0 League Cup second-round loss at home to League Two team Crawley Town. On October 15, Diop scored his first goal for Fulham in a 2-2 draw against AFC Bournemouth at home.

International career

Diop has competed for France in youth international competitions at every level, making his debut for the France U16 team in 2013. He scored in the championship game as a member of the 2016 UEFA European Under-19 Championship winning team.[30] Diop not only won the competition but was also included in the Tournament Team.

On September 2, 2016, he made his UEFA European Under-21 Championship qualifying debut for France U21 against Ukraine.

Additionally, he is qualified to represent Senegal and Morocco, respectively, through his father and mother. He reaffirmed his international commitment to France in October 2018.
