New England Revolution

Matt Turner did not receive a pick in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft, but on March 3, 2016, following a fruitful preseason trial, he signed a professional contract with Major League Soccer (MLS) team New England Revolution.

2016–17 seasons

On April 29, he signed a loan agreement with Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer League. The following day, he made his professional debut against Toronto FC II, winning 1-0. Turner had seven clean sheets in 27 starts during his two loan stints with the Kickers.

2018 season

Brad Knighton and Cody Cropper were beaten out for the Revolution’s starting job going into the 2018 season by Turner. On March 3, 2018, he made his MLS debut against Philadelphia Union in the Revolution’s season-opening match, making four saves in a 2-0 loss. Turner started each of New England’s first four games of the season, going 1.25 goals against on the year with 16 saves. He made six stops on March 31, 2018, as the team defeated Houston Dynamo FC 2-0 at BBVA Compass Stadium, earning him his first MLS clean sheet. Since August 24, 2016, no Revolution goalkeeper had kept a clean sheet. Over the course of the 2018 season, he added four more clean sheets.

2019 season

Matt Turner reemerged as the club’s starter after a challenging start to the 2019 campaign that saw him drop to third string behind Cropper and Knighton. He eventually started 20 games and registered five clean sheets. The Revolution would be led by Turner to its first playoff game since 2015. Additionally, it was Turner’s first playoff game. In the opening round of the 2019 MLS Cup Playoffs against Atlanta United FC, he started for the Revolution. Turner placed fifth in the voting for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award, behind winner Vito Mannone, Bill Hamid of D.C. United, Sean Johnson of New York City FC, and Brad Guzan of Atlanta.

2020 season

Matt Turner excelled in 2020, and as a result, he was selected as a finalist for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year Award. With a record of 8-7-8, a new club record for goals against per game (1.08), six shutouts, and 22 starts during the course of the season, Turner helped his team advance to the MLS Cup Playoffs for the second time in a row. Turner finished the season with the second-best save percentage and goals against average (1.36) in Revs history. He also finished first among the top ten MLS goalkeepers in terms of saves, save percentage, and goals against average. Since the start of the 2019 season, his save percentage was the highest of any MLS goalkeeper. In the end, he came in second place to Andre Blake in the voting for the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year.

Matt Turner kept a clean sheet in the Revolution’s 2-0 victory over the Supporters’ Shield-holding Philadelphia Union in round one of the 2020 MLS Cup Playoffs. The Revolution defeated Orlando City SC 3-1 in the Eastern Conference semifinals after Turner turned aside a Nani penalty kick.

The New England Revolution’s supporters chose Turner as their team’s MVP in 2020, his teammates selected him as their Player of the Year, and the Midnight Riders, a group of Revolution supporters, selected him as their Man of the Year.

2021 season

Matt Turner maintained his strong play throughout the 2021 season, posting 28 starts, a 1.25 goals-against average, a 73.2 save percentage, and five shutouts. He received the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year award for 2021. He received the distinction as the first keeper in Revolutionary War history. After saving two penalties against the Liga MX All-Stars on August 25, 2021, Turner earned the title of 2021 MLS All-Star Game MVP. With 17 regular season victories, which tied for the most in the league, he also established a club record.

Arsenal

Matt Turner and Premier League club Arsenal announced their agreement on February 11, 2022, and it was announced that he would join the London club in the summer of 2022. He was the first summer acquisition made by Arsenal. According to reports, Arsenal paid a transfer fee of $6 million, which could increase to $10 million.
