Oleksandr Zinchenko was born in the Zhytomyr Oblast city of Radomyshl. He is a former student of the Youth Sports School Karpatiya in his hometown of Radomyshl (where Serhiy Boretskyi served as his first coach), FC Monolit in Illichivsk, and Shakhtar Donetsk, where he rose to the position of captain for the young team. In the 2013–14 UEFA Youth League, on December 9, 2013, he scored in a 1–1 draw with Manchester United.

Due to the Donbass War, he relocated to Russia with his parents. Despite not giving him any playing time, Shakhtar Donetsk wanted him back, but he left for security reasons. He played in Moscow’s amateur leagues for five to six months. He later trained with Rubin Kazan, but the club decided against signing him because Zinchenko was still under contract to Shakhtar, and signing him would have put Rubin at risk of a transfer ban.

Oleksandr Zinchenko entered into a contract with Ufa on February 12th, 2015. On March 20, 2015, he made his Ufa debut in the Russian Premier League against FC Krasnodar. He scored his first goal on July 25, 2015, in a 1-2 loss to FC Rostov.

Oleksandr Zinchenko joined Premier League club Manchester City on July 4, 2016, for an undisclosed sum that is thought to be around £1.7 million. Some were taken aback by the action.
