Before moving on to KSV Baunatal and later KSV Hessen Kassel, Stefan Ortega started his career with TSV Jahn Calden in northern Hessen.

He relocated to Arminia Bielefeld in 2007 and enrolled in their youth program. During the 2010–11 season, he made six appearances for the B squad in the Regionalliga West.

He was called up to the first team a year later, and on October 1, 2011, he made his senior debut for Arminia against 1. FC Heidenheim in place of the injured Patrick Plains.

In June 2014, Ortega joined TSV 1860 Munich on a free transfer. He made his Münchner Lions debut in 2014–15 by defeating Holstein Kiel 2-1 in the opening round of the DFB–Pokal. In August 2014, Ortega took over as the team’s starting goalkeeper in place of Gábor Király, who departed for Fulham F.C.

Ortega departed 1860 Munich after the 2016–17 season, when the team was demoted, and signed a three–year deal to return to Arminia, replacing the departing Wolfgang Hesl.

Following interest from Bundesliga team Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Ortega’s contract was extended by six months in January 2020. With Arminia Bielefeld, Ortega got promoted to the Bundesliga in 2020.

The squad ended in 15th place and escaped relegation in its debut season in the Bundesliga after defeating VfB Stuttgart 2-0 on the final matchday of the campaign.

In the league, Ortega was rated as the second-best goalkeeper by the German football magazine “Kicker.”

In July 2022, Ortega signed a free transfer agreement to join Premier League champion Manchester City.

He made his UEFA Champions League debut against Borussia Dortmund in a 0-0 group-stage match.

He also played in City’s 2-0 triumph against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup third round on November 9 at the Etihad Stadium, as well as their 3-1 success over Sevilla in the team’s subsequent Champions League group stage game.

In the fall of 2010, Ortega was chosen for the German U19 national team, but he did not participate.

On May 21, 2021, Stefan Ortega was listed as a possible reserve for the German national team at the UEFA Euro 2020. He would have been added to the squad if Kevin Trapp, Bernd Leno, or Manuel Neuer had to leave the game due to injury.
