Career

Steven Regal, who was born in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, began wrestling in 1977 and found his greatest success in the American Wrestling Association (AWA) in the mid-1980s. During his time there, Steven Regal won the AWA World Light Heavyweight Championship from Buck Zumhofe in 1984. The AWA began pairing him with “Gorgeous” Jimmy Garvin in 1985, and they surprise defeated the Road Warriors to win the tag title with the help of the Fabulous Freebirds. Four months later, Regal and Garvin were dethroned by Curt Hennig and Scott Hall. During this time, Regal also wrestled for World Class Championship Wrestling, challenging Brian Adias for the Texas Heavyweight Title.

The pair later signed with Pacific Northwest Wrestling of the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA), where he held the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship twice. Due to an injury, he vacated the title in December 1981.

Soon after joining Jim Crockett Promotions in 1986, Regal feuded with Denny Brown and defeated him for the NWA World Junior Heavyweight Championship. Regal’s time in the NWA came to an end unexpectedly, when he vacated the title and headed to the World Wrestling Federation (WWF).

Steven Regal’s career appeared to be on the upswing while with the AWA and NWA, but by 1985, the WWF roster was full of larger athletes and the major focus was on brawling over science. Despite his talent, Regal effectively became a jobber or preliminary wrestler, as was the destiny of many wrestlers at the time who were unable to get into the WWF without a colorful character. Steven Regal quit the WWF after a brief stint, never to wrestle for another major US promotion again. Regal then spent the following decade touring the independent circuit, particularly in the Chicago region, until his retirement in 1996.
