Thaddeus Young is an American professional basketball player who currently plays as a power forward for the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. Young’s NBA career began in 2007 when the Philadelphia 76ers selected him in the draft.

Thaddeus Young briefly played college basketball for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets before entering the NBA. He excelled as a freshman and declared for the draft shortly following his first season.

Thad has spent the majority of his NBA career playing fantastic games for multiple teams. Even though he has never won an NBA title, he has left his imprint on the game with his amazing presence on the floor.

After spending a season with the Spurs, the athlete signed with the Raptors in 2022 to continue his NBA career.

Thaddeus Charles Young Sr. was born on June 21, 1988, in New Orleans, Louisiana. Felton Young and Lula Hall raised him.

Felton, his father, was a basketball player who played collegiate basketball for Jacksonville University. The Buffalo Braves selected him in the 1978 NBA Draft.

Felton began teaching Young to play basketball at a young age. Thad was tall and powerful even as a child, thus he enjoyed participating in sports.

The sportsman used to attend a local Louisiana school and play basketball with his father in their backyard.

Lula, his mother, was a tough and hardworking woman. Their existence, however, was not simply because they were from a lower-middle-class household.

To meet her family’s necessities, Lula used to work as a manager at Popeyes Kitchen in New Orleans.

Parents of Thaddeus Young attempted to give him as much leisure as possible from their jobs. In order for him to develop his basketball skills and have time to practice.

Thad relocated to Memphis, Tennessee with his mother and sisters. He also attended Mitchell High School in Memphis, where he played basketball.

Lula supported her family by working for a company in Memphis. Her offspring, including Thad, helped with the household chores and grew up together.

Young continued playing basketball at Mitchell with his mother’s assistance. After graduating from high school, Thagic attended the Georgia Institute of Technology to play varsity basketball and further his education.

Young’s mother perished of breast cancer at age 57 in 2014.

His first year at the institution turned out to be his only season there. After concluding his first season with respectable results, he opted to forego his last three college years and enter the NBA Draft.

He was the youngest member of Georgia Tech’s first-year class in 2006 to enter the NBA Draft in 2007.

Thaddeus Young concluded his first season with 14.4 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game.

Professional Development

The 76ers selected him with the 12th overall selection in the first round of the 2007 NBA Draft on June 28, 2007. On November 7, he made his NBA debut and triumphed against the Charlotte Bobcats.

However, initially he did not see much action because the team already had veteran shooting guards. After they relocated Kyle Korver, he began to play more frequently for them.

As a freshman, Thad appeared in 74 games and started 22 of them. He finished the season averaging 8.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game.

Thaddeus Young played six additional NBA seasons for the 76ers, including four postseasons. He was never able to guide them to the championship, however. In 2014, he was eventually dealt to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Despite Thad’s outstanding performance at the time, the Timberwolves hardly utilized him. Despite playing in only 48 games during the 2014-2015 season, he averaged double-digit points per game.

Personal Life

Thaddeus Young is married to Shekinah Beckett, his long-term girlfriend. Thad and Shekinah originally met in high school in 2004. Beckett and he were acquainted by her cousin.

After almost seven years of dating, the couple got engaged on October 31, 2011. Their wedding was held at his home, and their closest friends and family were there.

Before they married, the couple had a son named Thaddeus Jr. They married in 2012 after having their first child in 2011.

Beckett struggled at first to adjust to Thad’s way of life, but she rapidly caught up.

Despite being a busy and hardworking player, he devotes a lot of time and attention to his game. Beckett, on the other hand, is very understanding and respects his vocation.

They have a strong bond, and she pays him visits during his matches with their children. He is also a family man who knows how to make his family happy.

Taylor, Shekinah’s second son, was born in 2014.
