Club Career

Silva made his professional debut for Fluminense in 2004 and stayed with the club for a few seasons before traveling to Europe to join Porto in Portugal. He only stayed at Porto for one season before being loaned to Dynamo Moscow in Russia for the 2006-07 season.

Silva’s next stop was Italy, where he joined AC Milan in 2009. He rapidly established himself as one of Serie A’s greatest defenders, helping Milan win the league title in 2011. He was an important member of Brazil’s defense during the 2013 Confederations Cup, which Brazil won by conceding only three goals. He was also a member of Brazil’s World Cup-winning squad in 2014, however he was injured and missed the team’s notorious 7-1 loss to Germany in the quarterfinals.

Silva was selected captain of the Brazilian national team in 2016, succeeding Neymar. Brazil failed to make an impression in the 2015 Copa America and the 2018 FIFA World Cup, but in the 2019 Copa America, he started in the final against Peru and won 3-1 to earn his second trophy with Brazil.
