Tony Halme Biography, EarlyLife

Tony Halme was born on January 6, 1963, and spent virtually his whole life in Helsinki. Tony Halme was a disturbed boy who lived in the Lauttasaari neighborhood. Since his childhood, yelling at others and portraying himself as a tough guy had been part of his image.

Tony Halme spent his childhood in Lauttasaari, Helsinki. His father left the family when Tony was six months old. His older brother – who was five years older than Tony – assumed the role of father figure. Halme only heard from his father a couple of times during his life. His mother was an alcoholic with a constant revolving door of male partners. As an adult, Halme considered his brother to be his only true friend. In the mid-1970s, Tony, his mother, and his brother moved to Soukka, Espoo. Halme attended kansakoulu [fi] and a oppikoulu.

Tony Halme Education

He later attended a Swedish-language school and studied at the electrician line at the Strömberg School of Engineering. However, he dropped out of the latter after two years. At the age of 16, Halme left his mother’s home and moved in with his uncle.

Initial years (1989-1990)

Tony Halme’s previous career in show fighting and boxing gave Halme a “tough guy” image, which was bolstered by well-publicized instances in which he defended himself in bar brawls. Verne Gagne developed Halme into a formidable professional wrestler.

The Universal Wrestling Federation was founded in 1990.

On October 29, 1990, he made his professional wrestling debut as The Viking for Herb Abrams’ Universal Wrestling Federation (UWF). He defeated The Patriots in his first match.

Wrestling Federation of the World (1993-1994)

Tony Halme made his World Wrestling Federation (WWF) debut as Ludvig Borga on July 6, 1993 (aired July 2), beginning a series of easy victories over enhancement talent. Tony Halme was dressed as a foreign environmentalist who despised America due to its pollution. Maamme, the Finnish national hymn, played during his entry. Borga defeated former WWF Intercontinental Champion Marty Jannetty at SummerSlam.

Borga thus advanced to the main event against the “All-American” Lex Luger. Borga ended Tatanka’s nearly two-year undefeated streak on Superstars on September 28, 1993 (aired October 30), pinning him with one finger after hitting him with a steel chair while the referee was preoccupied. Borga competed in the main event at Survivor Series, teaming up with Yokozuna, Quebecer Jacques, and Crush as the “Foreign Fanatics” against the “All-Americans” (Lex Luger, The Undertaker, and the Steiner Brothers).

The last two competitors were Borga and Luger, and Borga was eliminated by Luger following a running forearm smash. At a house event on December 14, Borga defeated Razor Ramon to win the WWF Intercontinental Championship. The match, however, proceeded since Razor’s foot was on the bottom rope.

Shawn Michaels intervened, hitting Razor with another Intercontinental Title belt, and Borga pinned Razor once more to win the title. However, the verdict was reversed, and Razor was declared the winner. Borga injured his ankle in a bout against Rick Steiner on January 17, 1994. This injury forced the WWF to cancel Borga’s plans, including his appearance at the Royal Rumble and a prospective WrestleMania match with Earthquake; he shortly left the WWF.

Halme was hospitalized after being involved in a boxing bout and using prescription painkillers, but his blood also revealed trace levels of amphetamines, and a police check of his House of Parliament office turned up illegal steroids. Halme said that the amphetamines were inserted into his drink without his knowledge. His trial was broadcast live on television by the MTV3 digital television channel in January 2004. Halme was given a four-month suspended sentence and a fine, although he remained to serve in Parliament. He was convicted of driving while intoxicated in 2006.

Tony Halme was involuntarily taken to a mental hospital in early March 2006, allegedly owing to delirium caused by excessive alcohol use. He had been diagnosed with alcohol-related cirrhosis and acute pancreatitis in 2006. He went on disability pay at the end of the Parliamentary term after spending nearly the whole year of 2006 on sick leave.

In December 2009, Halme informed a reporter that he was suffering from short-term memory impairment and had difficulty recalling things, but that he was still working on a book on his political career.
