The Portland Timbers announced Friday that they had signed Peruvian defender Miguel Araujo in a complete transfer from Dutch club FC Emmen.
The 28-year-old center-back is signed until 2025, with a club option for 2026.
Araujo will be an international player on the team. He can play once the MLS transfer window opens on Wednesday.
“We are pleased to welcome Miguel to the Portland Timbers,” said Timbers general manager Ned Grabavoy. “We believe Miguel adds another solid defensive option for us, and his experience playing in various leagues and competitions throughout his career will be invaluable.”
Araujo scored 12 goals and had four assists in 118 games for FC Emmen in the Netherlands’ top-tier Eredivisie during five seasons (2019-23).
“We feel Araujo’s experience, coming from a competitive league like the Dutch league, will make that position a very competitive one,” Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese stated. “Araujo is a Peruvian National Team international, so we’re excited to have a lot of leadership in that position.” We’re delighted he’ll be joining our team.”
Araujo has made 28 international appearances for Peru, including the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
