Trophies that Lionel Messi can win with Inter Miami in USA

Lionel Messi

Lionel Messi will be met with huge expectations when he arrives at Inter Miami.

Messi, widely regarded as the best player in history, will begin the next chapter of his career in the United States, moving from PSG to a struggling Inter Miami club that he will be expected to change.

Messi, who is set to make his Inter Miami debut on July 21, will have a lot of pressure on him to succeed right away in a league that many believe he should dominate.

Despite Inter Miami’s problems this season, Messi can still help the club rescue the season. Here is a list of all the trophies Messi will be fighting for in Major League Soccer in 2023 and beyond.

Trophies Lionel Messi has a chance to win with Inter Miami.

Messi may have recently stated that he has accomplished everything there is to achieve in football, but there is still a slew of silverware in North America that he may add to his trophy cabinet:

The MLS Cup

The MLS Cup is the most significant of the two trophies awarded by Major League Soccer for the league season.

With the MLS season divided into regular season and playoffs, the MLS Cup is awarded to the champion at the conclusion of the playoffs.

Lionel Messi can win the MLS Cup if he can help Inter Miami reach the playoffs, which is considered the most desired trophy of the league season. If they can make it through the bracket, each team that makes the playoffs has a chance to win the MLS Cup.

When Messi announced his decision to join Inter Miami, the club was seven points out of the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

MLS Supporters’ Shield

The Supporters’ Shield is Major League Soccer’s second league trophy, granted to the team with the most points during the regular season, regardless of conference.

While the MLS Cup is still awarded to the last team standing in the playoffs and is considered to crown the true “champions,” the Supporters’ Shield is often regarded as a better measure of the league’s best team, given the consistency of excellence required to win the Shield over the course of a long season.

Messi winning the 2023 Supporters’ Shield in his first season with Inter Miami is basically unachievable given how far behind they are at the end of June and the number of clubs they would have to overtake. However, they will undoubtedly be among the favorites in 2024 and 2025.

U.S. Open Cup

Every country, including the United States, has its own domestic cup tournament.

The Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup is the name of the cup tournament in the United States. The competition, which has been held since 1913, was renamed in 1999 to honor one of the most loyal owners in the history of the sport in the United States.

The 2023 U.S. Open Cup included 99 teams from around the United States’ soccer pyramid, including all 26 MLS teams headquartered in the United States. MLS teams compete against USL Championship (2nd division), USL League One (3rd division), NISA (also 3rd division), NPSL (semi-pro), and amateur entries later in the competition.

This trophy is still in play for Lionel Messi in his debut season with Inter Miami, despite a difficult job. Inter Miami has advanced to the semifinals, but they will have to travel to play FC Cincinnati, one of the greatest MLS teams in 2023.

CONCACAF Champions Cup

This club competition is the North American equivalent of the Champions League, with CONCACAF standing for “Confederation of North, Central American, and Caribbean Association Football.”

It was previously known as the CONCACAF Champions League to align with its sister tournaments in Europe, Africa, and Asia, however the competition will be renamed and expanded to 27 teams in 2024.

Inter Miami must either: In order to qualify for the CONCACAF Champions Cup, Inter Miami must:

win the MLS Cup finish first in the Eastern Conference regular season finish among the top four MLS point scorers win the US Open Cup or finish among the top three in Leagues Cup (additional information below)

Since 2000, only one MLS team has won the CONCACAF Champions Cup: the Seattle Sounders in 2022. In 2023, LAFC reached the final, but were defeated by Club Leon of Mexico.

Leagues Cup

The Leagues Cup is a completely new competition in which every club in MLS and Liga MX — 47 in all — compete to determine the greatest squad from North America’s two heavyweight leagues. Both MLS and Liga MX will take a break from domestic play to compete in the event from late July until late August.

It begins with a group stage and then progresses to a knockout bracket with 32 teams: 30 will advance from the group stage, joining the two previous season’s league champions, who will earn a bye to the knockouts.

Inter Miami was placed in a group with Atlanta United of Major League Soccer and Cruz Azul of Mexico, who finished eighth in the most recent Liga MX league tournament. Lionel Messi is scheduled to make his Inter Miami debut against Cruz Azul at home on July 21, followed by a home fixture against Atlanta United four days later.

Campeones Cup

The Campeones Cup, which was established in 2018, is another MLS vs. Liga MX competition that puts the previous league winners from each nation against one other.

Inter Miami would have to win the MLS Cup the previous year in order to qualify for the Campeones Cup.

The defending MLS champion LAFC will face Mexican champion Tigres in the 2023 Campeones Cup. Because the Liga MX season is broken into two parts (Apertura and Clausura), a one-off match known as the Campeon de Campeones is held to determine the champion who will advance to the Campeones Cup.

Individual recognition Lionel Messi has a chance to win with Inter Miami.
Landon Donovan Receives MLS MVP Award

The MVP trophy, presented to the greatest player in a particular MLS season, is the most prestigious individual domestic accolade that Lionel Messi could earn during his tenure with Inter Miami.

Messi is unlikely to have a realistic shot at the 2023 MVP award, given that he will only be entering for the final third of the season. But it shouldn’t be ruled out if he electrifies the league. Given his performance level in comparison to other players in the league, he will almost surely have a chance to win this award in 2024 or 2025.

The award is named after former USMNT star Landon Donovan, who played for the San Jose Earthquakes and the Los Angeles Galaxy.

MLS Golden Boot

Major League Soccer, like any other league, gives the Golden Boot to the season’s top scorer.

Again, as with the MVP award, Messi is unlikely to have enough time to catch up to the leads for 2023, given the amount of matches remaining and the number of goals he would need to score to catch up.

As of July 1, Hany Mukhtar led the MLS Golden Boot standings, having scored 13 goals in 20 league games for Nashville SC. If two or more players are tied at the top of the standings, assists, which Messi also excels at, are used as a tiebreaker.

Lionel Messi: Can he win the Ballon d’Or?

If Lionel Messi completely dominates Major League Soccer and continues to have international success with Argentina, many may wonder if he can win the Ballon d’Or from North America.

The only problem is that he would be ineligible. The Ballon d’Or is only given to a player who plays for a European club.

Until 1995, only European-born players were eligible for the prize, but the rules were expanded to include players from all around the world. To be eligible for the honor, they must play for a European-based club.
