Whitecaps end 2-game losing streak by edging Austin FC

On Wednesday, the Vancouver Whitecaps defeated visiting Austin FC 2-1 thanks to Sergio Cordova’s first goal of the season.

The win snapped the Whitecaps’ two-game losing streak (7-7-7, 28 points) and returned them to the Western Conference playoff picture.

Pedro Vite scored only 29 seconds into the game to put the Whitecaps ahead. Austin’s (8-9-5, 29 points) halftime substitute Rodney Redes also made an immediate impact, scoring the equalizer in the 47th minute.

Cordova added another goal two minutes after coming on as a 70th-minute substitution. Ryan Gauld found a streaking Cordova with a fantastic ball up the center, outmaneuvering two defenders to find space. Cordova scored from his preferred position in the center of the box to restore Vancouver’s lead.

It was Cordova’s first goal since signing an offseason Designated Player contract with the Whitecaps. Cordova went scoreless in his first 14 regular-season games with Vancouver after scoring nine goals with Real Salt Lake in 2022.

Nine minutes into extra time, Vancouver’s Tristan Blackmon was shown a yellow card for tripping Will Bruin on the edge of the box. A video review determined that the play did not merit a penalty kick, and Austin FC’s free-kick effort resulted in a Jon Gallagher shot that flew well over the net.

Austin FC’s four-game (3-0-1) winning streak came to an end.

Vite made MLS history with his goal on Wednesday and his early goal against the Houston Dynamo on May 31. He is only the second player in league history to score in the first 30 seconds of two games in the same season.

Redes’ goal was his first in MLS, arriving in his 46th regular-season encounter with Austin FC across parts of three seasons.

Emiliano Rigoni of Austin FC joined the game at halftime but was forced to leave in the 74th minute owing to an apparent injury.
