Who Are Manchester City's Biggest Rivals?

In England, Manchester City has been playing the sport of football (soccer) for well over 100 years, since way back in 1894. They have won numerous trophies over the years, including nine English Premier League (EPL) titles, seven FA Cups, and one Champions League title. With all of this success, Man City has developed some intense rivalries over the years. Keep reading to learn about Man City’s biggest rivalries in greater detail.

Manchester United

Without question, the most intense rival for Manchester City is their crosstown rival Manchester United. United has been the more successful team over the years, winning twenty EPL titles, twelve FA Cup titles, and three Champions League titles. Things have been tilting more in Manchester City’s favor lately, however, as they have won the EPL three straight years and five of the past six seasons. As for their head-to-head matchups, the two have met 166 times over the years. As of the end of the 2022-23 season, Manchester United have won 65 times, Man City have won 53, and the other 48 ended in a draw. Surprisingly, despite Manchester United having more wins, Man City has scored more goals as of 2023: 236 to Man United’s 231. Overall, United may have the edge historically, but City have been the better team in recent years.

Liverpool

Another hard-fought rivalry for Manchester City in the EPL is Liverpool. The Reds are one of the more successful European teams as well, winning 19 EPL titles, eight FA Cups, and six Champions League titles. As for their head-to-head matchups with Man City, Liverpool have dominated there over the years. In 175 matches as of the end of the 2022-23 season, Liverpool have won 81 times compared to just 47 for City, with the other 46 ending in a draw. In those meetings, Liverpool have scored exactly 300 goals to Man City’s 243. Man City have won the two most recent meetings with Liverpool, so they will be looking to keep that steak going into next season.

Arsenal

In terms of number of matchups, no team has faced Manchester City more than Arsenal. In their history, Arsenal has thirteen league titles, a record fourteen FA Cups, and sixteen FA Community Shields. When Arsenal faced off with Man City, they won 86 of the 185 meetings, while City won 56 and the other 43 have ended in a tie as of the end of the 2022-23 season. As for goals scored, Arsenal have put 292 in the back of the net to just 231 for Manchester City. In their most recent meetings, however, Manchester City have dominated Arsenal, winning their last eight matches dating back to October 2020. City will be looking to continue their dominance over their rivals into next season.
